What is the ranking or belt system in Silambam Asia, and how do I move up?

Silambam Asia follows a traditional yet structured ranking system that includes colored belts indicating your level of mastery—from beginner to advanced. Progression requires consistent training, demonstration of forms (salavarisai), techniques, and understanding of Silambam history and discipline. Grading is conducted by certified examiners at scheduled intervals.

Can I represent my district, state, or country in Silambam competitions through Silambam Asia?

Yes. Registered players are eligible to participate in district, state, national, and international competitions organized or recognized by Silambam Asia. Selection is based on performance, discipline, and commitment shown during regular training and past tournaments.

What uniform and equipment are required for training and competitions?

Practitioners must wear the official Silambam Asia uniform, which consists of a training shirt, trousers, and appropriate belt. For competition, you must also use protective equipment such as padded gloves, shin guards, and a head guard, especially during contact sparring events.

How often should I train to prepare for grading or tournaments?

Normal training will be 1 session per week, but a minimum of 2 sessions per week is recommended for those preparing for tournaments or higher-level grading. Dedicated players are encouraged to also engage in fitness conditioning, flexibility training, and practice of weapon techniques outside regular class hours.

Can I start learning Silambam even if I have no martial arts background?

Absolutely. Silambam is accessible to beginners of all backgrounds and fitness levels. Our instructors are trained to guide new students from the basics of footwork and stick handling all the way to advanced techniques and strategy.
